Six ways to earn good deeds.
There are several ways that we can earn good deeds. From minor deeds to major deeds, I believe that Allah, in His Mercy, gives us the opportunity to earn good deeds on a daily basis. I will list a few ways to earn good deeds.
1) Smiling at a person. This is a good deed that is often underestimated. However, it can earn you rewards because smiling at a person shows a form of kindness and can actually help us build a bond with others. One smile can make someones day.
2) Helping those in need. Whether it be through giving charity of through helping a family member/friend, helping people is another way of earning good deeds. Helping someone not only benefits them but it can benefit you as well as you will gain a blessing from it. Helping a person in need can plan your seeds to happiness. I watched a lecture by Sheikh Moutasem Al - Hameedy who addressed something similar to this and I will present a quote below:
“Go out of your way to help people, to ask people what do they need, specifically people that are closest to you. Try to make this a daily practice and see how Allah will bring happiness in your hearts. If you help someone, Allah will help you. Your friend is getting your help, you’re getting the help of Allah. “ - Sheikh Moutasem Al - Hameedy.
3) Kindness to parents. This is a huge deed which can earn you mountain of rewards. However, selfishness and having difficult parents can deter us from being kind to our parents. Therefore, it is important for us to educate ourselves on the rights of our parents and our duties towards them as this will make this good deed easier to do. Our parents have sacrificed nearly everything for us and there are hardships that they do not discuss so always do your best to be kind. And if you are someone who has difficult parents then do what you can for them and Allah will reward you.
4) Kinship. In this day and age, the breaking of family ties is very common and only leads to more problems. It is important for us to do our best to uphold family ties. This requires patience as well as forgiveness. Islam encourages us to keep maintain good bonds with people, whether they are family or not. Do your best to be kind to others as maintaining peace is better than the breaking of ties.
5) Voluntary fasts
Fasting holds a vast amount of rewards. In Islam, it is Sunnah to fast on Mondays and Thursdays so we should try our best to fast when we can. Remember, there is a gate in Jannah named Ar- Rayyan which is specifically for those who observe fast.
6) Dhikr. This is one of the best ways to remember Allah. There are several types of dhikr that we can do on a day to day basis. Saying something as simple as Subhan'Allah wa bi hamdihi (All Glory is to Allah and all Praise to Him. Glorified is Allah, the Great). There is a hadith that states that this form of dhikr is light on the tongue but heavy on the scales. Dhikr can also increase your chances of being forgiven.
Note: There may be times where we do good deeds for others but the effort is not appreciated by the people. It is very easy to become disheartened and lose our purpose. But you must remind yourself of your intentions and be aware of the fact that Allah is watching. So even if your good deed is not appreciated, know that your reward lies with Allah.
