I started watching K dramas in 2019. I was initially a anime watcher, but over the years I have switched to K dramas. For me, K dramas are like real life anime, I love the cinematography but I also believe the K drama industry are good at delivering great performances, heartwarming & heartbreaking stories & development. I will list my top 5 k dramas below.
Twenty Five Twenty One
2521 is a drama which is set in the late 90's, during the IMF crisis in South Korea. It focuses on youth & overcoming obstacles. A young 18 year old fencer meets a 22 year old soon to be reporter. Both affected by the IMF crisis in their own individual ways, they strike up a friendship which slowly develops into love. Na Hee-Do & Baek Yi-Jin face their own struggles and growth throughout this story. When I first watched this drama, I wasn't as into it as the pacing is a little slow in the beginning. It was during my 2nd watch that I started to fall in love with the drama. The reason being, it was realistic & it reminded me of my youth. It portays the transition of youth to adulthood, the hardships that come with it as well as memories that you cherish forever.
Start Up
Starring two popular actors, Suzy & Nam Joo-Hyuk, Start Up is a k drama about starting up your own business but also involves a love triangle & has wholesome friendships. It focuses alot on dreams and goals. For me, start up was a fun watch. I enjoyed the drama for what it was, I loved the OST's and I loved the main male lead, Nam Dosan. It was entertaining, funny & also some sad moments, but you will grow to love some of the characters (esp the samsan tech trio). For those who majored in computer science/ engineering, this show may be of interest to you as well as those who plan to start up their own business.
DP
I cannot believe it took me so long to watch DP. However, I am glad I watched it when I did because season 2 is only a few weeks away! DP is an intense drama which explores the corrupt military system in South Korea. Military enlistment is compulsory for men in South Korea starting from the age of 18 (some may be exempt due to medical conditions etc). There is alot of debate on the enlistment system there which I won't delve into, but you see the brutality of the military & the effect is has on young men. It did have the odd comic relief scenes which gives abit of a breather from the more intense scenes. There is bullying scenes involved & it can be violent so for those who struggle to watch such scenes, I would advise to watch with caution. It is only 6 episodes long. Starring the popular actors Jung Hae In, this drama will take you through a range of emotions. I am so excited for season 2.
My Name
One of my favorite all time K dramas. My Name is a k drama based on revenge. For me, I generally like k dramas with a badass female lead & this drama gave me just that. Han So Hee plays the role of a young girl whose father is killed in the hands of a gang & she joins the South Korean police force in a bid to hunt down the person who killed her father. Packed with action & intense scenes, My Name is an entertaining watch & will keep you hooked through each episode. It is only 8 episodes long so a short k drama but I have grown to also like shorter k dramas over time as it gets straight to the point.
Snowdrop
This drama faced alot of controversy but taking that away, Snowdrop is a gripping k drama. Set in 1987 South Korea, it explores a dictatorial government, North Korean spies & also romance. What stood out to me the most about this K drama was the comic relief scenes. For me, the comic relief scenes were the funniest I have seen in the k dramas I have watched so far. As well as that, it does get action packed as the episodes go on & I'm so glad I gave it a watch. There are also plot twists involved which you may or may not predict. Blackpink Jisoo & Jung Hae In are the main leads. I would like to note that despite this being Jisoo's first role, she did amazing, as alot of her scenes were intense & required heightened emotions.
****************************************
These are my 5 top K dramas. It's a mix of slice of life & action genres, two genres that I tend to lean towards. I personally think the K drama industry do well in their darker genres & slice of life genres. I like K dramas that get to point and are action packed but sometimes I also like a relaxing & simple k drama. If you decide to give any of these a watch, I hope you enjoy 💗
